Shiva represents pure consciousness, ananda (bliss), the perspective that can carry us beyond the small concerns that pull us away from our still point. Shiva is nearly always shown sitting in deep meditation, reminding us that there is a view that transcends past and future, here and there, mine and yours. While he is known as the God of destruction, what Shiva destroys is the illusion of our separateness. When we invoke Shiva or chant his name, we align with the union at the heart of yoga.
